I have played this course twice. Sort of. The first time was rain shortened to 9 holes. Which leads me to part of this review. My first experience with The Brookside Club was about 3 years ago, and I was playing with some friends just after the 4th of July. The day was cloudy and overcast, but no rain when we teed off. By about the 6th hole it started to rain a little bit. By the 8th it was an absolute monsoon. We decided to just play through it, in to the clubhouse and finish up 9. Upon entering the “pro shop” (which at that time was a trailer), we were greeted with quite a cold reception. We asked if we could receive any type of rain check, even for 9 holes, since we had only played 9. We were told they do not issue rain checks at any time and we could wait out the rain if we decided to. Looking outside, I half expected to see Noah floating by with some giraffes or something. So we certainly weren’t waiting around. I could not believe that with all the other competition down in the Cape Cod area that they would be so stupid to treat customers this way. We paid for a full 18 holes and were not going to play half of it and they wouldn’t issue us any type of refund!
So that began my boycott of the course a few years back. However, this year I decided to give it another shot (which completely goes against my Italian nature of holding very long grudges). I did this only because of the close proximity to my in-laws house and the ease of meeting friends there.
In my first visit back since boycott the first thing I noticed was the clubhouse. They had built a huge clubhouse/proshop/bar/function area which looked very nice. The pro shop personnel seemed friendly, and the starter was informative and friendly as well. But that about ended it for me. I was just not a fan at all of the course. Extremely hilly with many “trick shots” and blind shots on almost every hole. Very much target golf and if you have not played the course before you are doomed. The yardages from the fairway seemed to be extremely off for me as well. Sometimes seemed to be 10-20 yards off I thought. The course however was in great shape though and the green fees for a weekend were only about $65 I think. Which for Cape Cod in the summer is very reasonable. But I just don’t think I’ll be back. Between my first experience and now getting a good look at the course on my second visit, it just doesn’t seem like my kind of course.
Anybody else played this course and want to weigh in?
