It’s pretty safe to say that Ryan Moore does things his own way. Just take a look at his attire for yesterday’s opening round of the Masters. White button-down shirt, with a skinny tie that was tucked in to his buttons. I for one loved it and saw it as a throwback tribute to Bobby Jones, one of the founders of the Masters.
Late last year Moore finally signed an endorsement deal with a club manufacturer, Scratch Golf. Not only is he an endorser, he’s a stakeholder in the company, surely a smart move on his part as Scratch is really starting to take off and make a name for themselves.
Moore made news earlier this year as he featured his custom made Scratch irons. They weren’t your standard 3-PW iron set. Instead, they were all based on degrees of loft. So instead of “give me a 6-iron”, he’d be saying “give me the 40 degree”.
Until this week Moore had been playing Scratch’s SB-1 custom iron set, your typical Tour players blade like club. However, this week Moore requested a custom set of irons be made up just for the Masters. No, they’re not green (my first guess). He’s playing Scratch’s cavity back, game improvement EZ-1 irons. Most likely a set of clubs for the common man/golfer, and could quite possibly be found in your’s and my golf bags. In fact, I think they may be in GoodWalk co-contributor Mike Steffes’ bag. Moore made the switch this week because the EZ-1′s are more forgiving and hit the ball higher, allowing him to stop the ball more quickly on the slippery Augusta greens.
So far it seems to be working. Moore shot an even par 72 yesterday and at the time of this posting, he’s -1 through 5 holes of round 2.
The EZ-1′s are hardly game improvement. I wouldn’t advise anyone with a handicap above 8 to play any of Scratch’s forged irons.
Well, it may be why he doesn’t win on the tour with any frequency if at all outside of I believe some small tournaments
