Two events this week with the WGC Match Play and the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Because of the Match Play format of the WGC, Yahoo! uses the Mayakoba event this week instead in its league. Not many big names to choose from this week, but the field does feature a few guys you can hopefully bank on. The El Camaleon Golf Club is designed by Greg Norman (who is also in the field this week), and is a beautifully designed course which features caves in the middle of the fairways and holes that hug the crystal clear blue ocean. I played the El Camaleon a few years back shortly after the TOUR stopped there, and it’s a fun and interesting track.

The Picks

A Group - Only a handful of players are even available to choose from in the A group, but the two names that stand out are Charles Howell III, and Spencer Levin. Levin took solo 2nd place here last year, and despite a closing round 78 last week at the Northern Trust Open, I like him to start.

B Group – The B group is a bit more of a “who’s that?” than a “who’s who” grouping of guys. Chris Stroud isn’t having the best of years thus far with three MC’s, but he played in the final grouping at this event last year and ended up finishing alone in 4th place. I’ll bank on his showing from last year and give him the nod. I’ll roll the dice with rookie Miguel Carballo who ranks a very respectable 26th in GIR so far this year on TOUR.

C Group - I have to go with defending champion Johnson Wagner in the C group. He’s still rocking the Magnum stache, and his game has cooled a bit in the month of February, but Johnson is still having a career year so far picking up a win, a runner up, and another top 10 in this early season.

Starting Foursome: Spencer Levin, Chris Stroud, Miguel Carballo, Johnson Wagner
On the Bench: Charles Howell III, Roberto Castro, Michael Thompson, Brian Gay

Wish I would have stuck with Levin in round four! Missed following you on Stroud.
