There are two stops for the TOUR this week. The world’s top players head to Doral to tee it up on the TPC Blue Monster for the WGC Cadillac Championship, while the rest of the TOUR heads to Puerto Rico. Yahoo uses this week’s WGC event for it’s Fantasy leagues, and there is no shortage of top players to choose from. The field features 74 players (including the world’s top 50), and it’s a no cut event, which can make roster changes mid tournament more difficult.
The Picks
A Group - Phil Mickelson has taken a couple weeks off after his playoff loss at Riviera. But going off his prior two starts, which include the win at Pebble and the playoff loss in LA, his game is sharp and he’s well rested. Mickelson also won here in 2009 and has a good history at Doral.
B Group – The B group is absolutely stacked again this week. It’s difficult to not pick Tiger and Rory again this week. I was slightly worried about burning too many starts with them, but given the fact that most people will be picking them, it’s almost a must just to play some “defense” against others in your league. I’m starting Rory for obvious reasons, but leaving Tiger on the bench to start, and we’ll see if he heats up over the course of the tournament as he did last week. Instead, I’ll start Dustin Johnson. Johnson started the season rather slow, coming off knee surgery, but despite a 2-1 record at the Match Play, he’s posted two top 5s this year in stroke play events, and finished 2nd here a year ago.
C Group - Charl Schwartzel has been lighting it up worldwide, where he’s chalked up four top fives in seven starts, which include a T5 last week at the Honda. He led the field in GIR last week, a stat that will certainly help at Doral. Add to that, his 2nd place finish to Ernie Els at this same event back in 2010.
