The TOUR stays put in Texas this week for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Last year David Toms followed up a disappointing playoff loss at the PLAYERS with a victory at Colonial. Toms ranked T4 in both fairways hit and GIR at last year’s event en route to victory. The par 70 course allows for very low scoring, as can be seen by the average aggregate winning score being -15 over the past 12 years. So look for players who have tendencies get really hot and go really low.
The Picks
A Group - Zach Johnson has been extremely hot as of late, which includes a T2 at the PLAYERS, as well at the RBC Heritage. A 2010 winner at Colonial, where he lit the course up with a tournament record of -21.
B Group - A lot of great options again in the B group, with players who have a great track record at this event. To start I’ll be going with the defending champion David Toms, and Rickie Fowler who’s been on fire as of late. Toms is second in all-time earnings at Colonial, so it’s safe to say it’s a track he likes. He’s continuing his attack of hitting fairways again this year, ranking 2nd on TOUR. If he continues that trend this week, he’ll be a threat to repeat.
C Group - I’m trying to be careful with my starts for him, but it’s really hard to stay away from Jason Dufner right now. He’s playing with so much confidence and his game is firing on all cylinders. He’s hitting fairways (6th) and greens (13th), two stats that will serve him well at Colonial. Backing him up, I like Charlie Wi who was runner-up to David Toms emotional victory last year.
Starting Foursome: Zach Johnson, Rickie Fowler, David Toms, Jason Dufner
On the Bench: Kevin Na, Hunter Mahan, Bo Van Pelt, Charlie Wi
